Glapsides is the best-known free public beach on the Famagusta coast — a long, wide stretch of sand about 5.5 kilometres north of the city. It's the closest free beach to the Eastern Mediterranean University campus and draws a young, student-heavy crowd through the summer, alongside Famagusta locals and visiting families.
Location & access
The beach sits on the east coast, on the road heading north out of Famagusta toward Salamis. It's well signposted from the main highway and from the city. There's free parking near the beach and the regional dolmuş (minibus) network stops along the same coastal road. From the EMU campus it's a short drive or a manageable shared-taxi ride.
The beach
Glapsides is a long sandy beach with one unusual feature: the water stays shallow for a long way out — up to about 150 metres before the seabed drops to swimming depth. That makes the beach popular with families with very young children and with weak swimmers, who can walk out a long way without losing the bottom.
Facilities
The beach is municipally run with free entry. Facilities include the Glapsides Restaurant, a beach bar, a mini-market for snacks and beach essentials, and shower blocks. Sun loungers with sunshades are available at low rental cost — among the cheapest in the area. Toilets and changing rooms operate near the main entry.
Activities
Beach volleyball is a regular fixture, with informal pickup games as well as the seasonal tournaments hosted on the sand. The beach also runs dolphin rides through certain hours in summer. Camping is permitted in designated areas behind the beach — uncommon for a public beach in North Cyprus, and one of the reasons Glapsides has a particular following among student and budget travellers.
Who it suits
Glapsides is the go-to free beach for EMU students and for visitors based in or near Famagusta who want a real beach day without paying for a club. The student crowd gives it a young, casual atmosphere; the shallow water makes it equally workable for families. Visitors who want a polished resort-club experience with cabanas should look at the Iskele or Long Beach strip instead.
